Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I have flat feet and had to get surgery on my left foot. While playing football, I somewhat sprained my right foot and haven't been playing on it for about 2 weeks. I have been walking on it though. I tried running today and the minute I pushed off of my foot, pain shot throughout my calf and my Achilles. I am wondering if maybe this is something I should get looked at or if I just need to keep resting it.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

It sounds like you may be experiencing some discomfort related to your sprained foot, especially given your history of flat feet and previous surgery.

First and foremost, it's important to rest your foot and avoid activities that cause pain, such as running. Stretching exercises can be beneficial for conditions like plantar fasciitis, which often accompanies flat feet. I recommend incorporating gentle stretches for your calf and the plantar fascia to help relieve tension and improve flexibility.

Additionally, familiarize yourself with the Ottawa ankle rules, which can help you determine if you need an X-ray for any potential fractures. If you find that you meet any of the criteria for an X-ray, it would be prudent to get one.

For pain relief, consider taking NSAIDs like ibuprofen or ketoprofen, as they can help reduce inflammation and alleviate discomfort.

If your symptoms persist or worsen despite resting and following these guidelines, I recommend consulting a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation.

Thanks
