Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

My sciatica pain has gotten really bad lately. My right thigh feels like it’s covered with millions of tiny needles pricking me, and it’s also numb in some areas. What could be causing this, and what should I do next?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out Dr. Galen, Please find the below response to your query.

1. The sharp, needle-like sensation and numbness in your right thigh are often caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, which runs from your lower back down your leg. This condition is called sciatica.

2. Common causes include a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or muscle spasms that put pressure on the nerve. Numbness indicates the nerve is affected, so it’s important to get a proper evaluation.

3. I recommend scheduling an online consultation with a doctor who can review your symptoms, medical history, and possibly suggest imaging tests like an MRI to identify the cause. Meanwhile, gentle stretching, avoiding prolonged sitting, and using heat or cold packs may help reduce discomfort.

Thanks
