Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

Hi, around my shin bone in my left leg (outside and a bit on top) hurts after a fall to the left side. It has no visual effects but hurts when I walk and hurts so much without any pressure, just a touch onto it. Should I take an X-ray? I think it’s tissue damage though.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

A fall can certainly lead to bruising or a contusion/sprain even if there are no visible effects on the skin. Pain around the shin area, especially without significant pressure, may indicate soft tissue damage, such as a sprain or strain.

While structural damage usually leads to walking difficulties and noticeable swelling, it's essential to listen to your body. If the pain persists or worsens, getting an X-ray can provide reassurance and help rule out any fractures or serious injuries.

Additionally, rest, ice, compression, and elevation (the R.I.C.E. method) can help alleviate discomfort. If the pain continues, I recommend seeing a healthcare provider for a thorough examination and tailored treatment plan.

Thanks
