Hello Doctor,
I’m experiencing popping and cracking sensations in my sternoclavicular (SC) joints on both sides whenever I raise my arms, with the left side feeling noticeably worse. I also have acromioclavicular (AC) joint separations on both shoulders, again more severe on the left. Despite wearing a sling and immobilizer, I haven’t seen any improvement. In fact, physical therapy seemed to make the pain and instability worse. My tennis season starts in about a month, and I need advice on how to manage the pain and instability effectively so I can play. What options do I have to reduce the pain and prevent further injury? I’m not sure what else to do at this point.
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out Dr. Galen, Please find the below response to your query.
Although my specialty is dentistry, joint issues like yours often benefit from evaluation by an orthopedic or sports medicine specialist. Popping and pain with SC and AC joint injuries can be challenging, especially with prior separation and unsuccessful PT. Pain management might include anti-inflammatory medications and gentle exercises, but avoid anything that worsens symptoms. Given your upcoming tennis season, I recommend consulting a specialist soon to explore treatment options like targeted therapy or possible interventions. Rest and protecting the joints as much as possible remain important. If needed, I can help refer you to an appropriate expert.
Thanks
