Hello Doctor,
I've recently noticed a sudden decrease in strength in my right arm, specifically in my shoulder and chest. It first happened while I was bench pressing—my right side suddenly gave out, and I couldn’t lift the weight at all, even though I felt no pain. I haven’t changed my workout routine, and I always use a spotter. The weakness feels significant, almost like my muscles aren’t activating properly. Should I take a break for a month, lift lighter weights, or consider getting an MRI? Has anyone experienced something like this before? Could this just be a temporary loss of strength, or should I be concerned about something more serious?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
This is unusual since you have no pain. Sudden strength loss in one arm could be due to nerve compression, muscle fatigue, or a rotator cuff issue. Reduce gym workload, focus on high-rep, low-weight exercises, and try swimming to assess muscle function. If weakness persists, get a physical exam to determine if imaging like an MRI is needed. Listen to your body and consult a doctor if symptoms continue.
Thanks
