Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I broke my finger four days ago, and a plaster cast was applied to it. The finger is mobile. Should I use a splint on it?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Diagnosis: Non-displaced fracture of the proximal phalanx of the third toe

Treatment plan:

Stabilization: Tape the affected toe to the adjacent toe

Avoidance: Refrain from using elastic sports shoes or high heels for 4-6 weeks

Healing time: Approximately six weeks

Surgery: Not required as it is non-displaced

Stability: Although non-displaced, the fracture is still unstable and can be painful

Swelling: Important to avoid; elevate the foot on a chair if swelling occurs

Follow-up: Regular monitoring to ensure proper healing and to address any concerns

Prognosis: Good, with proper care and adherence to the treatment plan

Thanks
