Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

Recently, I received a diagnosis of double scoliosis. I'm a 26-year-old male, and my condition was identified on April 29th. The measurements indicate an 11-degree curvature in the thoracic region on the right side and an 18-degree curvature in the lumbar region on the left side. My X-ray results led my doctor to suggest that the thoracic curve may be influenced by the lumbar curvature. Naturally, this news has left me feeling quite concerned about the potential progression and worsening of my condition over time. My doctor recommended a few measures to manage the situation. He advised me to engage in swimming exercises regularly and to wear an elastic corset throughout the day, removing it only during sleep. Additionally, he suggested receiving massages for my back. However, he also mentioned that for many patients with similar conditions, the curvature tends to worsen over time. This has left me feeling quite anxious and confused. I'm particularly worried about the extent to which the curvature might worsen if it does progress.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Firstly, I want to assure you that there's no need to panic. Based on the information you've shared, it appears that the curvature of your spine is minimal. Additionally, given your age of 26 years, it's less likely for the curvature to progress significantly. As for the advice given to you by your doctor, I would like to offer some clarification.

While swimming can indeed be beneficial for maintaining overall physical health, there's limited evidence to suggest that it directly influences the progression of scoliosis. Similarly, the use of an elastic corset may not be necessary, as it's unlikely to have a substantial impact on the curvature of your spine. Instead, I recommend focusing on exercises that promote flexibility and strength in your back muscles, such as stretches and pull-ups.

It's understandable that you're feeling worried and confused about the potential progression of your condition. However, it's essential to approach this situation with a sense of calm and optimism. By adopting a proactive approach to your health and following the recommendations provided, you can effectively manage your condition and maintain a good quality of life.

Thanks
