Hello Doctor,
I have a boutonnière deformity in my left pinky, and the finger is completely unable to bend or move. The joint at the tip of my finger is also stiff and can't bend properly. I'm wondering what my options are for treatment. If the condition is severe enough, will the ER consider going ahead with surgery?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
A boutonnière deformity, where the middle joint of the finger bends abnormally, often results from an injury to the tendon that straightens the finger. While this is not considered an emergency situation, surgery can be a viable option depending on the severity of the deformity. If the deformity is significantly affecting the function of your finger or causing persistent pain, surgical intervention may be recommended to repair the tendon and restore movement. It’s best to see a specialist, such as an orthopedic hand surgeon, to discuss the appropriate treatment plan based on the extent of your condition. In some cases, non-surgical options like splinting or physical therapy may also help if the deformity is less severe.
Thanks
