Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I think I tore my calf muscle, and I'm considering going to the ER. What will they do for me there? Will I need imaging, and how do they treat it?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

In the ER, they will assess the severity of your calf tear through a physical exam and possibly imaging (ultrasound or MRI if needed). Treatment depends on the grade:

Grade 1: Mild strain—treated with rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE).

Grade 2: Partial tear—may require crutches, therapy, and longer recovery.

Grade 3: Complete rupture—possible immobilization or surgery.

Protecting the muscle with strapping/taping is crucial. Recovery is good, but let the ER team check for imbalances.

Thanks
