Hand Injury Not Healing? What Should You Do Next?

Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I stabbed my hand below the thumb almost a month ago. The wound is closed but still pink with a bump underneath. It’s not hot, I have no fever, and it’s not very painful, but my thumb movement is still limited. Is this normal? Should I keep it covered or leave it uncovered?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

It sounds like you may have some scar tissue or a small underlying issue from the initial injury. While some firmness under the wound can be normal during healing, persistent swelling or limited movement could indicate improper healing. You may need further evaluation to determine if re-suturing or additional treatment is required. I recommend consulting a doctor to assess the wound. If a procedure is necessary, a short course of antibiotics may help prevent infection.

Thanks
