Toe Fracture No Progress, Pain Relief?

Published on, 07 February, 2024. Answered by Dr. Ahmed Youssef and Verified by Dr.Galen Team
Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I broke my toe three weeks ago, and after wearing a plaster cast for four days (due to discomfort), my doctor switched it to a splint. I just had a new X-ray today, and it looks like there been no improvement. The pain is still quite intense. I've attached the recent X-ray for you to review. Can you please explain the current status and suggest any measures we can take to relieve the pain and possibly speed up the healing process?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr.Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Pain Management Strategies

1. Medication: Follow your doctor & apos;s recommendations for pain relief medication. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, may be suggested.

2. Elevation: Keep your foot elevated to reduce swelling and alleviate pain

3. Ice Packs: Apply ice packs wrapped in a cloth to the injured area for 15-20 minutes at a time to help with pain and swelling.

4. Protective Measures: Proper Foot wear: Wear supportive and comfortable shoes to minimize stress on the injured toe

5. Avoiding Stress on Toe: Be cautious with activities that could worsen the injury. Consider using crutches or other assistive devices if needed.

Thanks,
