Hello Doctor,
I broke up with my girlfriend about four weeks ago, but we recently got back together. Since then, my anxiety—especially my health anxiety, which I’ve always had but was able to manage—has gotten a lot worse. It’s been hard to deal with, and I keep noticing different physical symptoms. At first, I had pain around my waist, then I started experiencing muscle twitching while trying to fall asleep, and now I’ve been feeling dizzy. I don’t know if this is all from anxiety or if something else is going on. Should I be concerned?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
1. It’s understandable that after a stressful event like a breakup and reconciliation, your anxiety may flare up, especially if you have a history of health anxiety. Anxiety can manifest in various physical symptoms, including muscle tension, twitching, dizziness, and even localized pain. These symptoms are often linked to heightened stress levels and the body's natural response to anxiety.
2. However, to ensure there are no underlying medical concerns contributing to these symptoms, it would be beneficial to consult with a healthcare provider for a proper assessment. Additionally, speaking with a mental health professional can help identify whether your symptoms align with anxiety and explore effective management strategies, such as therapy, lifestyle adjustments, or medication if needed.
3. In the meantime, practicing relaxation techniques, maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, and engaging in physical activity may help alleviate some of your symptoms. If your dizziness worsens, persists, or is accompanied by other concerning signs, please seek medical attention promptly.
Thanks
