Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I feel sick, and I experienced blood once in my urine and had waist pain. I went to the chemist, and he suggested it might be a pelvic infection and gave me antibiotics. The following morning, I woke up feeling nauseated and went to a nearby hospital. They tested my urine and said I was pregnant. The next day, I decided to consult a bigger hospital. I tested urine again, which came out positive for pregnancy, but the blood HCG test was negative. I took an ultrasound, and they found 3.6cm fibroids but didn’t show signs of pregnancy. I was scheduled to see a gynecologist the following week, but I haven’t visited yet. My concern is that I had morning sickness without vomiting, which stopped today. Yesterday, I had a yeast infection, which hasn’t cleared yet. Could I be pregnant since two urine tests were positive, but the blood test was negative? I’m confused about my chances of pregnancy.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr.Galen. Please find the below response to your query

I'm sorry to hear you're going through such a challenging time. Both the blood test and urine test for beta-HCG are generally reliable and have similar accuracy, so it's understandably confusing to get mixed results as you did. In this case, an ultrasound is the best way to get a clearer picture of what's happening. If a skilled specialist has examined your reproductive organs with an ultrasound and confirmed that you are not pregnant, then that is the most definitive confirmation available. However, it's still advisable to consider doing another ultrasound for peace of mind, especially in situations like this.

As for the fibroids, which are non-cancerous, treatment is typically only necessary if they cause symptoms. The yeast infection you mentioned might be linked to the antibiotics you took. What's essential now is determining whether you have elevated beta-HCG levels and, if so, understanding the cause. It’s also important to confirm the cause of your symptoms.

I understand that you're feeling worried, and that's perfectly normal. I strongly recommend following through with your scheduled gynecologist appointment to get a thorough evaluation.

Thanks
