Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I have a concern that has been bothering me. Could you please shed some light on it? I experienced a yeast infection about two weeks ago, and now my period seems to be late. Is there a possibility that the yeast infection could be the cause of my late period?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Firstly, it's essential to understand that yeast infections, also known as "vaginal thrush," can occur at any point during the menstrual cycle and may indeed lead to disruptions in the menstrual pattern. During menstruation, the shedding of the uterine lining weakens the vaginal microbiota and may affect the growth of bacteria in the vaginal environment.

At this particular phase of the menstrual cycle, your body produces a hormone called estrogen, which indirectly influences the levels of glycogen in the vaginal tissues. This glycogen serves as a food source for the fungus Candida Albicans, which is responsible for causing yeast infections. Therefore, fluctuations in estrogen levels during menstruation can potentially exacerbate the growth of yeast in the vaginal flora.

Moreover, the pH level of the vagina tends to be higher than usual during menstruation, creating a more alkaline environment. This alkalinity can further promote the proliferation of yeast in the vaginal area.

It's crucial to address a yeast infection promptly to prevent the development of more severe complications. If left untreated, candidiasis, the condition caused by Candida Albicans, can persist for an extended period, leading to chronic symptoms. In severe cases, particularly in individuals with weakened immune systems, the fungus may penetrate deeper tissue layers, enter the bloodstream, and trigger life-threatening blood poisoning known as sepsis.

Therefore, I strongly advise against taking a yeast infection lightly. Seeking timely medical attention and appropriate treatment is essential for managing the infection effectively and preventing potential complications.

Thanks
