Hello Doctor,
I started having UTI symptoms on Friday night just the urge to go and discomfort. Sunday I picked up some test strips and they showed positive all day. Monday I had no symptoms and it was positive in the morning and then negative throughout the day and Tuesday (today) the same. I’ve been taking D-mannose, uva Ursi, and lots of water. I think it was very mild. Could this mean it’s slowly clearing up?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
Your experience with UTI symptoms and the subsequent changes in test results suggest a mild and possibly resolving infection.
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) often present with symptoms like frequent urination, discomfort, and urgency. In your case, symptoms began on Friday, but by Monday, they had diminished significantly, and test strips indicated fluctuating results—positive on some days and negative on others. This pattern can indicate that the infection is clearing up, particularly if you are experiencing fewer symptoms.
You mentioned taking D-mannose and uva ursi, both of which are known for their potential benefits in managing UTIs:
-
D-mannose is a type of sugar that may help prevent bacteria from adhering to the urinary tract walls, thus aiding in the resolution of the infection. Research indicates that it can be effective in reducing UTI symptoms and recurrence, particularly against E. coli, the most common UTI-causing bacteria.
-
Uva Ursi (bearberry) has been used traditionally for urinary issues. It contains compounds that may exert antimicrobial effects; however, scientific evidence supporting its efficacy in treating UTIs is mixed. It is generally advised to use uva ursi for short durations due to potential toxicity, especially concerning liver health.
Given the mild nature of your symptoms and the positive effects of hydration and the supplements you are taking, it is plausible that your body is effectively clearing the infection. Continue to monitor your symptoms and maintain hydration. If symptoms return or worsen, consulting a healthcare provider would be advisable to ensure proper treatment.
