Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I'm in a lot of pain when I pee, and my urine is bloody with what looks like pieces of clots in it. The pain only starts after I'm done peeing, and it's so intense—it feels almost like giving birth. I'm really scared. What could be causing this?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. It sounds like you may have a urinary tract infection (UTI) or possibly kidney or bladder stones. You need a full urinalysis and urine culture to identify any infection, as well as an ultrasound to check for possible stones in your urinary tract. Based on the test results, the appropriate treatment can be prescribed.

2. In the meantime, you may need urinary antibiotics such as Cephalexin or, if the infection is more severe, an injectable antibiotic like Gentamicin. If the pain is severe, pain relievers can also be considered. Since infections like this can recur, it’s crucial to complete a full 10-day course of treatment and follow up for a review to ensure the infection is fully resolved.

Thanks
