Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I keep getting urinary tract infections (UTIs) repeatedly, even after completing a full 5-day course of antibiotics. It happens every 3 to 4 months, and it's becoming really frustrating. What can I do to prevent this from happening again and find a permanent solution?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Confirm Diagnosis: Urine cultures to ensure correct antibiotics; check for underlying issues (e.g., kidney stones, diabetes).

Optimize Treatment: Complete antibiotics as prescribed; ensure correct choice based on culture results.

Preventive Measures:

1. Increase fluid intake.

2. Urinate before/after intercourse.

3. Wipe front to back, avoid irritants.

Non-Antibiotic Options:

1. D-Mannose, Methenamine Hippurate, Cranberry Extracts, Probiotics.

2. Antibiotic Prophylaxis (If Needed):

3. Post-coital, continuous low-dose, or standby antibiotics.

4. Partner Evaluation: Check for bacterial colonization if UTIs are sex-related.

5. Antibiotic Stewardship: Use antibiotics only when necessary to prevent resistance.

6. Specialist Referral: See a urologist if infections persist despite treatment.

Thanks
