Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

So about a week ago I was prescribed some antibiotics for my UTI. He also prescribed me fluconazole in case the antibiotics he gave caused a yeast infection. I kinda noticed the antibiotics weren’t helping because it was still hurting when I urinate and during sexual intercourse along with it still being red down there. I took the fluconazole last night and a few hours before I took it, I noticed three red bump-like things in the left side crease of my private area. I was a bit scared of what it might be. I woke up and it didn’t look as bad, but there were a few more. It has been itching because of the yeast infection.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr.Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

It sounds like you may be experiencing a combination of a urinary tract infection (UTI) and a yeast infection, which can sometimes occur together or in succession. Here are a few key points:

  • The antibiotics prescribed for your UTI may have caused a yeast infection, which is common.
  • The fluconazole you took is an appropriate treatment for the yeast infection.
  • The red bumps and itching you noticed are likely symptoms of the yeast infection, which can cause irritation, itching, and a rash in the genital area.

It’s concerning that the antibiotics did not seem to be helping your UTI symptoms like painful urination and discomfort during sex. This may mean the UTI is not fully resolved or that you have a more complicated infection.

My advice would be to:

  1. Continue taking the fluconazole as prescribed to treat the yeast infection. The itching and redness should improve over the next few days.
  2. Contact your doctor again about the persistent UTI symptoms. You may need a different antibiotic or a longer course of treatment. Untreated UTIs can lead to more serious kidney infections.
  3. Avoid sexual intercourse until the infections have fully cleared to prevent further irritation and spreading of the infections.
  4. Practice good hygiene like wiping front to back, urinating after sex, wearing cotton underwear, and staying hydrated to help prevent future UTIs and yeast infections.

Let your doctor know about the lack of improvement and any new symptoms like the bumps. With the right treatment, both the UTI and yeast infection should resolve within a week or two. Don't hesitate to follow up with your doctor if you have any other concerns.

Thanks
