Hello Doctor,
For about a week I’ve had some pain in my lower private area. I’ve looked it up and it’s called the perineum. It hurts if I sit a certain way, bend over, crouch, and sometimes it’ll itch, and when it does, it hurts. I’ve been taking my antibiotics that were previously prescribed to me for a yeast infection/UTI. Why could this pain be occurring?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr.Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
The pain you're experiencing in your perineum could arise from several factors, especially considering you've been prescribed antibiotics for a yeast infection or UTI. Possible causes include perineal injuries, such as tears or episiotomy from childbirth, which may lead to prolonged discomfort. Infections could also be a factor; even with antibiotics, a urinary tract infection might persist, or you could develop an abscess in the perineum, characterized by a red bump and swelling. Pelvic floor dysfunction, involving weak or tight pelvic floor muscles, can also cause pain that worsens with certain movements. Other conditions, like hemorrhoids or prostatitis, could contribute to discomfort, while referred pain from issues such as appendicitis may manifest in the perineum. It’s crucial to consult a healthcare provider to accurately diagnose the underlying cause of your pain, as they can conduct a thorough examination and suggest necessary tests. Continuing your antibiotics is essential, but if symptoms persist or worsen, notify your doctor. In the meantime, pain relief methods like sitz baths and over-the-counter pain relievers can help, and pelvic floor exercises might be beneficial if dysfunction is suspected. Understanding these potential causes and seeking medical advice will enable you to manage your perineal pain effectively and find suitable treatment options.
