Hello Doctor,
I went to urgent care because I was experiencing burning and pain while urinating, and they diagnosed me with a UTI, prescribing antibiotics. However, I just got a message saying my urine cultures came back negative. Should I be tested for STDs instead? What could be going on?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
1. Yes, it’s possible that a gonococcal infection could present with similar symptoms to a UTI. I recommend getting tested for STDs, including gonorrhea, after a clinical examination. It's important to use protection during sexual activity.
2. Once the diagnosis is confirmed, the appropriate antibiotic treatment can be started based on the specific organism found. In the meantime, drinking plenty of fluids and using mild urinary analgesics can help alleviate the pain and support your recovery.
Thanks
