Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I’m having an extremely hard time using the bathroom. Every time I do, I get a sharp pain in my urethra, and I have to sit slowly to avoid further pain. It doesn’t burn, but the pain is intense.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

The symptoms you are describing, such as sharp pain in the urethra during urination and the need to sit slowly to avoid further pain, are consistent with several possible causes. Here are some potential explanations:

  1. Urethritis: Inflammation of the urethra can cause pain during urination, potentially due to bacterial or viral infections, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like gonorrhea or chlamydia. Symptoms often include painful urination, itching, and discharge.

  2. Urethral Syndrome: Characterized by persistent or recurrent episodic urethral pain, usually during urination. The cause is often unknown but may include hormonal imbalances, urethra injury, or STIs.

  3. Urinary Tract Infection (UTI): UTIs can lead to sharp or burning pain during urination, commonly caused by bacterial infections and typically treatable with antibiotics.

  4. Kidney Stones: Severe pain in the urethra can occur if kidney stones become lodged, causing intense pain during urination.

  5. Trauma: Any trauma to the urethra, such as from a pelvic fracture, can result in urethral obstruction and pain.

  6. Local Irritation: Irritation from soaps, spermicides, or other substances can lead to sharp and intense urethral pain, especially during urination.

To determine the specific cause of your symptoms, it is recommended that you consult a healthcare provider. They will perform a physical examination and may order laboratory tests or imaging studies to rule out other conditions. Treatment options will depend on the underlying cause of your symptoms.

Thanks
