Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

About three months ago, I was bitten by a dog on my right leg. The wound healed on the surface, but I’ve been experiencing persistent pain in the same area ever since. The pain sometimes feels sharp or throbbing, and it gets worse when I walk or put pressure on my leg. There’s no visible swelling or redness now, but the discomfort remains. Should I be worried about any underlying issues? What could be causing this pain after such a long time? What steps should I take to get it properly checked and treated?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out Dr. Galen, Please find the below response to your query.

1. Since it’s been three months, it’s important to know if the dog was vaccinated and if you received antibiotics after the bite. Persistent pain can be due to chronic inflammation or a possible infection.

2. I recommend visiting an emergency room or your doctor for a thorough evaluation. They may order an X-ray and ultrasound to check the soft tissue and blood tests like CBC and CRP to assess for infection or inflammation. Treatment with antibiotics might be needed if an infection is present.

Thanks
