Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I've noticed some red marks on my private area, and I think it might be a rash. It's been there for a few days, and it's a little itchy, but not too painful. I'm not sure what caused it—maybe irritation, an allergy, or something else? Should I be concerned, and what can I do to treat it?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Mycosis fungoides is a rare type of blood cancer known as cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. It primarily affects the skin, starting as red, scaly patches or plaques that can sometimes be mistaken for eczema or psoriasis.

2. Over time, these lesions may thicken, turn into tumors, or spread to lymph nodes and internal organs in advanced stages. However, not all cases progress to severe stages—some individuals may only experience mild skin changes.

3. If you have persistent red marks or a rash that doesn’t improve with standard treatments, it's important to have it evaluated by a dermatologist or oncologist. A skin biopsy is often necessary to confirm the diagnosis.

4. While mycosis fungoides is chronic and slow-growing in most cases, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can help manage symptoms effectively. I recommend scheduling a consultation for further evaluation and guidance on the next steps.

Thanks
