Hello Doctor,
I think I might have PCOS. I got my period at the age of 10, and I’m now 15. This all started around 2 years ago. My periods started getting irregular and would only come once in a while. I have most of the symptoms such as overweight, dark spots on my skin, acne, fatigue, excess hair growth, oily skin, and mood swings. My cousin has it, and my mom probably does too but hasn’t been diagnosed. So yes, it runs in the family.
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr.Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
PCOS at your age will need complete bloodwork, a urine test, and an ultrasound to assess the condition along with the symptoms you described, after a physical examination. Treatments are based on symptoms that need immediate care and those that require a step-by-step approach. Controlling weight helps manage many issues like irregular periods and fatigue. Hair removal for older hairs can be done by waxing, creams, or laser, depending on your choice and budget, with medication for newer hairs based on hair type and distribution patterns, as guided by your gynecologist. Treatment is long-term, with medications prescribed after tests. Most symptoms can be well managed, and treatment helps prevent long-term complications such as diabetes or endometrial hyperplasia and even cancer of the endometrium. A combined hormone pill can be used to regulate periods and can be started along with a weight loss regimen. Additionally, consult with a physician or endocrinologist if diabetes is indicated after bloodwork. Blood tests should include a hemogram, serum insulin, LH/FSH ratio, serum testosterone levels, blood sugar levels, and lipid profiles. An ultrasound will primarily check the ovaries and uterus. Be assured that you will be treated and will feel better.
