Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I've been diagnosed with PCOS. Normally, my periods range between 16–48 days apart, but this one started on day 25, and now I've been bleeding for 13 days. The bleeding isn't too heavy anymore—it's mostly spotting or breakthrough bleeding. I thought it had stopped, but it started again. I am iron deficient because of my periods and take daily iron supplements. Is it normal to bleed for longer than 7 days with PCOS?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

No, bleeding for more than 7 days is not normal, even with PCOS. Prolonged bleeding can lead to complications like worsening anemia and could indicate other underlying issues, such as hormonal imbalances, uterine polyps, or fibroids. I recommend scheduling an appointment for further evaluation. This may include blood tests, an ultrasound, and possibly adjusting your treatment plan to regulate your cycles and manage the bleeding.

Thanks
