Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I have PCOS and started taking Cyprodiol in July, which regulated my periods until I stopped in September. For the next three months, I took Inofolic but didn't get my periods. Now I've started Cyprodiol again, and it's the second day, but I feel nauseous. I am unmarried. What should I do?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

It is essential to understand that polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a chronic condition that often requires long-term management and consistent follow-ups with your healthcare provider. The management of PCOS frequently involves hormonal treatments, such as Cyprodiol, which you have been prescribed. If the nausea is unbearable or significantly affecting your daily life, we can consider alternative treatments. One option is Spironolactone, which is a milder medication that can also help manage the symptoms of PCOS. Spironolactone works by blocking androgen receptors, which can reduce symptoms like excessive hair growth and acne. However, it is important to note that Spironolactone can cause a decrease in potassium levels, which may present as muscle weakness or fatigue. To mitigate the risk of low potassium, you can consume potassium-rich foods such as bananas, oranges, and fresh juices. Ensuring a balanced diet with adequate potassium can help manage this potential side effect. Additionally, it is important to maintain regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider to monitor your response to treatment and make any necessary adjustments. Managing PCOS often requires a combination of lifestyle changes, such as a healthy diet, regular exercise, and possibly weight management, along with medication.

Thanks
