Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), which causes my periods to be irregular. I usually go 2 to 4 months without a period, and when I do, it lasts about 3 days with light bleeding. Recently, I've been bleeding continuously for a month and a half, and this week it has become much heavier. Today, I've bled through 3 super-sized pads and 1 ultra tampon in less than 3 hours, which is quite alarming.

Given my history with PCOS, I’m unsure if I should go to the emergency room or wait for my next doctor visit. I don’t want to overreact, but I also don’t want to ignore these symptoms if they could indicate a serious issue. Could you please advise me on what steps I should take?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

I appreciate you sharing your situation, and I understand your concern. Based on what you’ve described, you need to go to the emergency room as soon as possible. Heavy bleeding that is sudden and significantly more than usual can indicate a serious issue that requires immediate attention.

There are several possible reasons for your heavy bleeding. With PCOS, hormonal imbalances can lead to irregular periods and changes in bleeding patterns. However, the volume of bleeding you mentioned is concerning and needs further evaluation to rule out conditions like a thickened uterine lining, miscarriage, or ectopic pregnancy, especially if you are sexually active.

At the emergency room, the medical team will likely perform tests, including ultrasounds and blood work, to assess your condition. If necessary, a dilation and curettage (D&C) may be performed to stop the bleeding. Please seek care immediately, and ensure you communicate all your symptoms to the healthcare providers for the best possible care.

Thanks
