Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I’m looking to improve my overall health and would like to create a balanced diet plan that meets my nutritional needs. Can you help me understand how to design a meal plan that supports my health goals? I want to make sure I'm getting the right nutrients while also considering my lifestyle and any specific dietary preferences I might have.

Hello

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

To build a nutritious diet, I recommend focusing on a variety of food groups. According to the World Health Organization, your diet should include plenty of fruits, vegetables, legumes (like lentils and beans), nuts, and whole grains such as unprocessed maize, millet, oats, wheat, and brown rice. Aim to consume at least 400 grams, or five portions, of fruits and vegetables each day. Keep in mind that starchy foods like potatoes, sweet potatoes, and cassava should be excluded from this count.

In addition to fruits and vegetables, incorporate good sources of protein into your meals. This can include lean meats, poultry, fish, dairy products, and plant-based proteins. Also, remember to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.

Healthy fats are important as well. Consider using olive oil and other sources of good fats in your cooking. Including some fruit juices can help you get essential vitamins and minerals, but be mindful of sugar content.

Lastly, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of physical activity. Even just 15 minutes of exercise per day can greatly benefit your mental and physical health, helping to detoxify your body and improve your overall well-being.

Thanks
