Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

Is it more effective for weight loss to drink cold or hot beverages like water or tea? I've recently switched from sodas to water in my weight loss journey. However, I once consumed excessive amounts of water and had a negative experience, so now I'm starting with 20 oz of ice-cold water per day. A friend suggests that water should be either at room temperature or hot for weight loss, claiming that cold water can solidify fat in my system. Is this claim accurate?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Hydration: Both cold and warm water can help with hydration, which is important for overall health and can support weight loss by promoting a feeling of fullness.

Calorie Intake: While water itself doesn't contain calories, replacing sugary drinks like soda with water can reduce calorie intake, aiding in weight loss.

Metabolic Effects: Some studies suggest that drinking cold water may slightly increase calorie expenditure, as the body works to warm the water to body temperature, but the effect is likely minor and not a primary factor in weight loss.

Overall Lifestyle: Weight loss is influenced by a combination of factors including diet, exercise, sleep, stress management, and overall lifestyle habits. Drinking warm water alone is unlikely to lead to significant weight loss without other lifestyle changes.

Thanks
