Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

Is it okay that I take the recommended 2 of "Swanson Ginger and Turmeric vitamins" per day? Each vitamin has 300 mg of Ginger and 300 mg of Turmeric. I take each vitamin with a little black pepper to help absorption. I became worried about the Turmeric potentially causing issues when I saw articles talking about liver damage from it. I just wanted to make sure it was okay to take and that I'm taking an acceptable amount.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Combining Turmeric with black pepper may indeed increase your body’s ability to absorb Turmeric’s beneficial compounds, as black pepper contains piperine, which boosts curcumin absorption.

2. However, recent studies have raised some concerns, as a small number of patients have experienced liver injury linked to Turmeric supplements, with a notable number of cases recently reported in the United States.

3. To minimize risks, consider obtaining Turmeric from natural sources, such as adding small amounts to food, rather than from high-dose supplements. Additionally, monitoring your liver health with periodic checkups, such as liver function tests or an ultrasound, can be a helpful precaution.

4. If you have any liver conditions or take other medications, please consult your healthcare provider to ensure safety.

Thanks
