Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

My doctor prescribed amlodipine 2.5 mg for my blood pressure and metformin extended-release 500 mg for my diabetes. Is it safe to take these two medications at the same time? Will taking them together affect how well the metformin works?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Yes, you can take amlodipine and metformin extended-release together. These medications do not have any direct interactions, so it's generally safe to use them simultaneously. However, it’s important to note that amlodipine may cause some increase in blood sugar levels in certain individuals. While this is not common, it could potentially affect the effectiveness of metformin in controlling your blood sugar.

Therefore, I recommend monitoring your blood sugar levels regularly to ensure they remain stable while on these medications. If you notice any significant changes or have concerns about your blood sugar management, please reach out to your healthcare provider for further guidance.

Thanks
