Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I have asthma and I've been dealing with a persistent cough lately. Can you please recommend a cough syrup that's safe and effective for someone with asthma?

Hello

Thank you for reaching out Dr. Galen, Please find the below response to your query.

1. I do not recommend cough syrup for people with asthma. In asthma, a cough is often a warning sign of airway irritation or an approaching asthma flare-up. Cough syrups don’t treat the root cause in asthmatic patients and can sometimes hide important symptoms or even make things worse.

2. If you're coughing and have asthma, it's best not to self-medicate. Instead, see your doctor as soon as possible. You may need an adjustment in your asthma treatment—like an inhaler or anti-inflammatory medication—to help control the symptoms safely.

Thanks
