Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I’m 15 years old and 5’5". I feel like I might be short for my age and I’m wondering if my height could be due to a lack of vitamins. My dad is pretty tall, so I’m hoping I might still grow taller. I’ve been looking at multivitamins and wanted to know if they are safe to take for my growth. Should I try taking them, or is there something else I should consider for increasing my height?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. The calcium, vitamin D, magnesium, and phosphorus are involved in bone health, which is central to growth. Therefore, we advise you to take supplements containing these nutrients if your diet lacks them. Additionally, foods like meat, fish, eggs, butter, milk, and dairy products like yogurt (which also contain probiotics and are beneficial for growth) are great options.

2. Protein, whether from plant-based or animal sources, is also crucial. It's not just about taking a multivitamin but making sure you are eating a balanced, healthy diet. Healthy fats, like olive oil, and incorporating fruits and legumes like coconut, can also support your growth. Regularly eating a variety of nutrient-rich foods will help you grow at a steady rate.

Thanks
