Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

Can a meniscectomy be done badly? I asked strongly for a repair but from the morning before it was written as a removal... the scars are also much bigger than my previous keyhole surgery scars for a much bigger surgery, including ACL reconstruction and BH meniscus medial repair.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Meniscus repair is most effective when done shortly after an injury and if the tear is located in a blood-rich zone, which aids in healing. If these conditions aren't met, repair options can be more challenging, though not "bad," but the results may be less predictable. Arthroscopic techniques like shaving or remodeling are the gold standard for treating meniscus tears. In more complex cases, such as a meniscus transplant, open or semi-open surgery might be required.

Thanks
