Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

Do I need surgery for a boxer’s fracture?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Based on the X-ray results you’ve shared, it appears this is a single-plane fracture and doesn't show any displacement, which means it's a non-dislocated fracture without any shortening. In such cases, surgery is usually not required. The main complication that could arise from an untreated dislocation is a reduction in flexion power, which could affect tasks like playing the piano or typing on a keyboard.

2. If surgery isn’t needed, the fracture typically requires 4 to 6 weeks of casting or bracing to allow proper healing. On the other hand, surgery could allow for earlier physiotherapy to speed up recovery. If you choose the non-surgical route, you’ll need to wait about 5 weeks before resuming any strenuous activity or training.

Thanks
