Hello Doctor,
I smoked weed once about a week ago, and I have a drug test coming up in another week. How long does THC stay in the system, and do you think I’ll be clear by then? I don’t smoke regularly, just that one time. Will it still show up on a urine test?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
1. THC, the active compound in cannabis, can stay in your system for varying lengths of time depending on the type of test used. In blood or saliva tests, THC is typically detectable for about 2 to 24 hours after use. However, urine tests—one of the most common methods—can detect THC for up to 3 days in occasional users, while regular or heavy users may test positive for up to 30 days or more. Hair tests have the longest detection window, potentially showing THC use for up to 90 days.
2. Since you only smoked once a week ago and do not use it regularly, there’s a good chance that a standard urine test may not detect THC after another week. However, detection times can vary based on factors like metabolism, hydration levels, and body fat percentage. If the test is highly sensitive or a hair follicle test, THC may still be detectable. If you are concerned about the results, staying well-hydrated and allowing more time before testing may help reduce the likelihood of detection.
