Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I’m scheduled for a tonsillectomy soon, and I’ve been taking a progesterone-only pill for birth control. Do I need to stop taking it before the surgery? I want to make sure there are no risks or complications.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

It is generally recommended to stop taking a progesterone-only pill (POP) about 4 to 6 weeks before surgery to reduce the risk of thromboembolic complications, such as blood clots. While POPs have a lower risk compared to combined oral contraceptives, any hormonal contraceptive can potentially increase clotting risks, especially in procedures requiring general anesthesia and prolonged immobilization. Before making any changes, consult with your surgeon and healthcare provider to ensure a safe plan for managing contraception and minimizing risks during your recovery.

Thanks
