Could My Diabetes Be a Misdiagnosis? How to Get the Right Test

Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I’m in my 30s and was recently diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, which has been really confusing for me because I work out regularly and eat healthy. I also have Hashimoto’s Disease, so I’ve been wondering if I might actually have LADA (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults) instead. I’d like to get tested for it, but I’m not sure exactly what tests to ask for or how to bring it up with my doctor. He tends to dismiss my concerns, so I want to make sure I approach this the right way to get the correct tests and diagnosis. What’s the best way to advocate for myself in this situation?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

It’s understandable to question your diagnosis, especially with your healthy lifestyle and Hashimoto’s Disease. While most adult-onset diabetes is Type 2, LADA (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults) is worth considering.

To rule out LADA, you can ask your doctor for:

1. GAD Antibodies – The most common marker for LADA

2. Islet Cell Antibodies (ICA) & Insulin Autoantibodies (IAA) – Indicate autoimmune activity

3. C-Peptide Test – Measures insulin production (low levels may suggest LADA)

4. Fasting & Postprandial Insulin Levels – Assess pancreatic function

Since your doctor has dismissed concerns before, coming prepared with this list can help.

If needed, consider seeing an endocrinologist for further evaluation. Early diagnosis ensures proper treatment, as LADA may require insulin sooner than Type 2 diabetes.

Thanks
