Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

p>I recently had some blood tests done, and my AST level is 118, and my ALT level is 86. What could that mean? Should I be concerned?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

The normal AST

1. ratio is typically less than 1. In cases of alcoholic liver disease, the ratio is often greater than 1 in 92% of patients and greater than 2 in 70%. Generally, normal AST levels range from 10 to 40 units per liter, and ALT levels range from 7 to 56 units per liter.

2. Mild elevations in these enzymes are considered to be 2-3 times higher than the normal range. Elevated levels of AST, particularly, may indicate liver damage, or it could point to damage in other organs like the heart or kidneys.

3. Further tests may be necessary to evaluate other liver enzymes and provide a clearer picture of your condition. It's important to consult your healthcare provider to determine the cause and necessary next steps for treatment.

Thanks
