Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

Why do I get a headache when I cough, sneeze, or blow my nose? Should I be concerned?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. It sounds like you may have a sinus infection, which can cause pressure in your head and worsen with actions like coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose. To help reduce the nasal congestion, you can try a decongestant containing pseudoephedrine (be sure to follow package directions and consult your pharmacist or doctor if you have any medical conditions like high blood pressure).

2. If your symptoms persist for more than 10 days, worsen after initially improving, or are severe (like high fever or facial swelling), it may be a bacterial sinus infection. In that case, a course of antibiotics such as amoxicillin or another beta-lactam antibiotic could be considered. Please consult your doctor for an evaluation and proper prescription if needed.

Thanks
