Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I have been unwell for the past year with various symptoms, including a fast heart rate, difficulty sleeping, constant tiredness, loss of appetite, feelings of nausea, headaches, dizziness, blurry vision, and an even faster heart rate upon exertion. My doctor prescribed sertraline a few months ago, but I have not taken them yet. Currently, I'm taking bisoprolol, fludrocortisone, a drowsy antihistamine, and mirtazapine for sleep. My question is, can I also take the antidepressant and see if it helps improve my condition?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Sertraline and Mirtazapine are both prescribed for depression, and taking both simultaneously can lead to a rare but serious side effect known as Serotonin Syndrome. This condition is characterized by symptoms such as hallucinations, confusion, blurry vision, and more. In my opinion, I would not recommend taking both medications at the same time, and I strongly suggest following up with your previous physician for further guidance.

Thanks
