Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I am a 19-year-old male, I am 5 foot 4 and weigh 170lbs. I usually eat around 1800-2000 calories a day and rarely exercise. I am currently doing a 7-day water fast. I know medical assistance is generally recommended for anything over 72 hours. Also, I just realized it takes over a week to get an answer, so I might be dead!?!

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Water fasting has been shown to have potential health benefits, including lowering the risk of some chronic diseases and stimulating autophagy, a process where your body breaks down and recycles old cells. Some common reasons people try water fasting are for religious or spiritual reasons, weight loss, detoxing, or health benefits. However, it’s important to note that water fasting for extended periods without supervision can be risky, especially if you have underlying health conditions or are not getting enough nutrition.

For better energy levels, consider including fruits, vegetables, and animal proteins such as fish, meat, or chicken in your diet. It’s essential to have a balanced intake of nutrients. If you continue with the fast, please monitor your health and seek medical attention if you feel unwell or experience any concerning symptoms.

Thanks
