Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I’m a 23-year-old woman, and in April, I had sex with my partner for the first time. Since that day, I’ve noticed some changes in my vaginal secretions. The discharge has become slightly dark yellow, thicker, and sometimes it has a chlorine-like smell. Occasionally, I also feel a little pain at the bottom of my stomach, but it doesn't interfere with my daily life. I’m not on any medications, and my menstrual cycle is very regular. Is this something I should be concerned about?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Based on the symptoms you've described, it is possible that you may be experiencing a lower genital infection, which can sometimes occur after sexual activity, especially if it is your first time. The changes in your vaginal discharge, including the color, consistency, and odor, along with the lower abdominal pain, suggest an infection that could be linked to a sexually transmitted disease (STD).

2. It is important to have both you and your partner assessed for any STDs, as this could be a source of the infection. Even if your partner does not have symptoms, they may still be carrying an infection that needs to be treated. I recommend you visit a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation, including testing for STDs, so that appropriate treatment can be started for both you and your partner if necessary.

3. Additionally, your doctor may recommend further testing, such as a pelvic exam or swab tests, to confirm the diagnosis and ensure you receive the correct treatment.

Thanks
