Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I've been experiencing intense itching in my vagina, along with a thick, white, clumpy discharge. It feels really uncomfortable, and I'm worried I might have a vaginal yeast infection. What should I do?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. It’s important to get examined to determine the exact cause of your symptoms. While a vaginal yeast infection is a possibility, other infections can have similar symptoms, and different organisms can coexist. A microscopic examination of the vaginal discharge can help confirm whether yeast is present, and additional tests, such as a urine sample and blood sugar levels, may be necessary to rule out other conditions, especially if infections are recurring.

2. If you haven’t mentioned your menstrual cycle, it’s helpful to consider whether any changes in your cycle or hygiene habits could be contributing to the issue. Maintaining good hygiene, wearing breathable cotton underwear, and avoiding harsh soaps or douches can help prevent irritation.

3. Once a proper diagnosis is made, treatment can be prescribed accordingly. If it is a yeast infection, antifungal medications—either oral or vaginal—can help resolve the symptoms. If another infection is present, appropriate treatment will be provided based on the findings. It’s best to consult a doctor to receive the right care.

Thanks
