Hello Doctor,
My partner got an STD shot a week before testing positive for Trichomonas. The shot was supposed to cover Trich, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. He hadn’t started his antibiotics (metronidazole) yet, and we had protected sex. The night before, I took 4 metronidazole 500 mg tablets. Is it necessary for me to get tested again for Trich, and how long should I wait to do so? I’m 37, 126 lbs, 5’5”, and occasionally smoke. I have anxiety and depression, and take Advil, famotidine, loratadine, and sometimes Ativan.
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
It's important for both of you to finish the full course of metronidazole as prescribed. Wait at least two weeks after completing treatment before getting tested for Trichomonas. This allows enough time for the antibiotics to work. Avoid unprotected sex during this period to prevent reinfection. If you have any concerns after the two weeks, a test can confirm if the infection is gone.
Thanks
