Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I had a sexual encounter about three weeks ago and lately, I’ve been experiencing itching in my crotch, around my butthole, and near my lips. I’ve been tested for STDs out of anxiety and everything came back normal, so I’m not sure what this might be. Could this be related to my diet? I tend to eat a lot of sugar and I don’t have the healthiest eating habits. Any suggestions on what could be going on?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Based on your description, it’s possible that the itching could be due to a fungal infection like Candida, especially if you had unprotected sex. Candida can cause itching in areas like the crotch, buttocks, and even around the lips.

2. However, before jumping to conclusions, it’s important to confirm this diagnosis with a proper examination and possibly a swab test to rule out other potential causes. If Candida is the issue, topical antifungal creams, such as one containing clotrimazole or miconazole, can help relieve symptoms. Applying the cream to the affected areas would be a good first step.

3. Since you mentioned a high sugar intake, it’s also worth noting that a diet high in sugar can sometimes contribute to fungal infections, as sugar can fuel the growth of Candida.

Thanks
