Hello Doctor,
I’m a 23-year-old female, and my 22-year-old boyfriend recently tested positive for HSV-2 (index 5.9, no outbreaks). We have unprotected sex, and my test came back negative for HSV-2. Can we continue our relationship without me contracting the virus? What precautions can we take? Also, I tested positive for HSV-1 once, but negative a few months later. Could this mean I developed immunity? My mom has HSV-1, and my dad has HSV-2.
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
HSV Infections Are Often Subclinical:
The virus can stay dormant and reactivate when the immune system is weakened, causing outbreaks, often without noticeable symptoms.
Prevention of Transmission:
Use condoms during intimate relations to reduce transmission risk, even if no outbreaks are present.
HSV-1 Test Results:
The positive HSV-1 result may have been a false positive, or your immune system might have developed some protection.
HSV-1 and HSV-2:
Both strains can cause oral and genital infections. You may have some natural immunity due to family history, though it’s not guaranteed.
Recommended Approach:
Continue precautions, monitor symptoms, and consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice.
