Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I have a question regarding my hypothyroidism. Due to unavoidable circumstances, I went without my levothyroxine medication for an extended period. Consequently, my body has been greatly affected. Besides experiencing fatigue, I've noticed severe swelling in my legs, particularly in my calves and feet. Additionally, I have developed a liquidy rash on one leg. Could these symptoms be attributed to my hypothyroidism? I recently restarted my levothyroxine treatment, but it has only been 13 days and I haven't noticed any significant improvement yet. I understand that it may take up to 6 weeks or longer for physical symptoms to improve. Should I continue to wait to see if the swelling improves?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

As a dermatologist, I can confirm that the symptoms you are experiencing could indeed be related to your hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism can slow your body's normal rate of functioning, leading to fluid retention and edema. Additionally, skin changes such as dryness, rash, or thickening can occur due to the slowed metabolic rate associated with hypothyroidism.

It's encouraging to hear that you've restarted your levothyroxine treatment. As you've correctly mentioned, it can take 6 weeks or even longer for physical symptoms to improve, as the body needs time to adjust to the new levels of thyroid hormone.

However, considering the severity of your symptoms and the nature of your leg rash, which appears 'liquidy', it is advisable to seek immediate medical attention. This could potentially indicate an infection or another underlying condition, such as cellulitis. Prompt evaluation by a healthcare professional is crucial, especially if you are experiencing additional symptoms such as redness, warmth, or fever. Please do not delay seeking medical help.

It's essential to have these symptoms assessed as soon as possible to rule out other potential causes and receive appropriate treatment.

Thanks
