Patient Question

I've had a pimple or zit near my penis for the last two days. It popped today when I squeezed it, and blood and pus came out. What should I do next? It's still inflamed.

The presence of a pimple or zit on the penis can be concerning, but it's important to remember that pimples can form anywhere on the body where there are pores, including the penis. Pimples occur when pores get clogged with oil and bacteria, leading to the formation of red bumps filled with pus. In the case of a pimple on the penis, it's best to leave it alone and avoid touching or popping it, as this can lead to worsening of the condition and potential infection. The pimple should heal on its own if the area is kept clean and dry. However, if the bump persists or there are other symptoms, it's important to see a doctor, as other conditions can cause similar lumps and bumps. If the pimple is accompanied by symptoms such as itching, burning, or discharge, it could be a sign of a sexually transmitted infection (STI) or other underlying condition, and medical attention is necessary. Common STIs that can cause symptoms similar to pimples include genital herpes, genital warts, and syphilis. In general, it's important to maintain good hygiene and avoid tight-fitting clothes, humidity, excessive sweating, and shaving, as these factors can increase the likelihood of pimples forming on the penis. If pimples occur frequently, medications such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or exfoliants can help reduce their appearance. However, these medications should be used with caution in the sensitive area around the penis. In summary, if you have a pimple on your penis, it's best to leave it alone and keep the area clean and dry. If the pimple persists or is accompanied by other symptoms, it's important to see a doctor to rule out any underlying conditions. Maintaining good hygiene and avoiding factors that increase the likelihood of pimples can help prevent their formation in the future.
