Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I have a group of blisters above my penis and don’t know what it is. It’s been there for around a month, and I don’t know how to treat it. I haven’t had any new sexual partners in the last 6 months.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Blisters above the penis can result from various causes, even without new sexual partners. Possible explanations include genital herpes, which is caused by the herpes simplex virus and leads to painful, fluid-filled blisters that can burst and leave sores. Although herpes symptoms usually appear 10-15 days after exposure, they can emerge later, as the virus can remain dormant. Treatment typically involves antiviral medications. Another possibility is pearly penile papules, which are harmless, small, dome-shaped bumps on the penis that do not require treatment unless they are cosmetically concerning. Lichen sclerosus, a chronic skin condition, can also cause blisters and white patches on the penis and is typically treated with corticosteroid creams. Molluscum contagiosum, a viral infection, can result in small, painless bumps on the genital area and usually resolves on its own but may require treatment if necessary. Lastly, allergic reactions to soaps, lotions, or latex in condoms can cause blisters, often accompanied by itching or redness.

Since your symptoms have lasted for a month, it’s important to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can conduct an examination, perform tests (like swabs for herpes), and recommend treatment based on the diagnosis. It’s also advisable to refrain from sexual activity until you’ve been evaluated to prevent the potential spread of infections. If you experience additional symptoms like pain, fever, or discharge, you should report them to your healthcare provider, as these could indicate a more serious condition.

Thanks
